Ender Dragon Guide

Overview

The Ender Dragon is the primary boss of Minecraft, guarding the End dimension. Defeating it is the traditional "completion" of the game, unlocking the outer End islands, elytra, and shulker boxes. The fight combines ranged combat, pillar climbing, and crystal destruction. Unlike the Wither, the Ender Dragon cannot be summoned — you must find and enter a Stronghold to reach the End portal.

The Dragon Egg is a decorative trophy block that cannot be obtained through normal breaking — it teleports when hit. Collect it using a piston or by letting it fall onto a torch.

Preparation

Full enchanted diamond or netherite gear is essential. Slow Falling potions are the single most useful item — they prevent fall damage when the Dragon knocks you off the island. Bring a water bucket to protect against Endermen (look at their feet, not their eyes).

A bow with Infinity or many arrows is critical for destroying End Crystals. Ender Pearls let you teleport back to the main island if knocked off. Beds are a popular speedrun strategy — placing and exploding beds near the Dragon deals massive damage due to the bed-overworld-explosion mechanic. Bring at least a stack of blocks for pillaring.

Destroying End Crystals

When you first enter the End, the Dragon is perched on the exit portal. Your first priority is destroying all End Crystals atop the obsidian pillars. Each crystal heals the Dragon, so the fight is nearly impossible with them active.

Shoot crystals with your bow from the ground. Some crystals are protected by iron bars — for these, you must pillar up to their level using ladders, scaffolding, or blocks, then shoot or break them directly. Destroy all ten crystals before focusing on the Dragon.

The Dragon Fight

With all crystals destroyed, the Dragon periodically perches on the exit portal at the center of the island. This is your best window to deal massive damage — charge in and hit it with your sword. The Dragon will then fly away and strafe you with dragon's breath, leaving purple clouds that damage players.

Avoid Endermen by wearing a carved pumpkin or looking at their feet. Keep moving and watch your step — the island has large gaps you can fall through. Use Slow Falling potions if you get knocked into the void.

Post-Kill

After the Dragon dies, it descends slowly and explodes into a shower of XP orbs (12,000 XP total — enough to go from level 0 to level 68). The Dragon Egg appears on top of the exit portal. Break it by clicking it with a piston or letting it fall onto a torch — do not mine it directly.

The exit portal activates, and an End Gateway spawns on the outer edge of the island. Throw an Ender Pearl through to reach the outer End islands, where you can find End Cities, Elytra, Shulker Boxes, and more End Ships with dragon heads.

Pro Tip: Bring a few beds for the speedrun strategy. Place a bed near the Dragon when it perches, then right-click it. The explosion deals 50+ damage to the Dragon, ending the fight in under a minute with good placement.
